Each room has a separate entrance and semi-private patio with seating. This property is 18+ only. Glass panels and concrete floors enhance the outdoor views. On the edge of Joshua Tree National Park, where a forest of wild paloverde trees meets towering granite boulders, the Joshua Tree Retreat Center welcomes the first traditional premium hospitality offering in the area. The 14 suites, now known as The Bungalows, were designed and constructed in 1960 by the architect Harold Zook as accommodations for the site’s on-campus teachers. Located in the northwest corner of the center’s more than 130 acres of desert, The Bungalows still feature their original wood exteriors, while the interiors seem sun-bleached, with earthy jute and sea grass rugs, woven cane-backed chairs, and intricate millwork to evoke a bare-sand feel.

The spaces were redeveloped by the hospitality company Homestead Modern and restored in collaboration with the consulting designer Brad Dunning; as a nod to the work of the Swiss architect Albert Frey, the rooms are accented with yellow textiles, the color of Encelia flowers, a hue popularized by Frey in his modernist structures in nearby Palm Springs.

Access

The Retreat Center campus is available for all our guests, though they often host events that require our assistance in maintaining a peaceful, quiet environment. Classes & spaces available to guests of The Bungalows will vary based on their programming schedule and require additional fees.

Neighborhood

Right outside of Joshua Tree Village, this area is secluded but offers easy access to the quirky, eclectic, and vibrant collection of unique High Desert shops, restaurants, and music venues. When you’re ready to explore, Joshua Tree National Park’s West Entrance is an 8-minute drive away.

You can find great eats, drinks, shops, and things to do within steps of your front door. Here are a few recommendations:
• Start your day at Joshua Tree Coffee Co., known for their famed coffee made from locally roasted beans (6-minute walk)
• Marvel at the handiwork at the World Famous Crochet Museum (3-minute walk)
• Pick up some lunch or a souvenir from the Joshua Tree Certified Farmers' Market, open Saturdays (8-minute walk)
• Find your next favorite read at Space Cowboy Books (2-minute walk)
• Perhaps close your day with the food, drinks and music offered at the rustic Joshua Tree Saloon (4-minute walk)

Up for a day trip? Don’t miss these area highlights - they’re worth the drive.
• Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum (9-minute drive) - As far from a stuffy gallery as you can imagine, this outdoor sculpture garden contains a unique collection of folk-art.
• Pioneertown (20-minute drive) - Put on your ten-gallon hat and stroll down Mane Street of this Wild West-inspired town, also known for Pappy & Harriet’s, a notable restaurant and venue.
• The Integratron (20-minute drive) - New age-y healing destination with a sound bath, originally designed by ufologist George Van Tassel with the goal of reversing the aging process.
• Palm Springs (40-minute drive) - Artsy town known for vintage shopping, art galleries, and the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.
• Mt. San Jacinto State Park (90-minute drive) - Expansive, hilly landscape with foot and horseback trails surrounding 10,834-foot Mount San Jacinto.

Transit

Many roads in the high desert are dirt, so please take it slow. While a car is required to get around, a four wheel drive car is not, but note that roads will often have ruts, particularly after a rain.

By confirming your booking, you agree to the following:

VACATION RENTAL AGREEMENT
THIS AGREEMENT IS NOT A LEASE AND CONVEYS NO RIGHTS IN REAL PROPERTY AT ANY TIME. YOUR USE IS LIMITED TO THAT DEFINED HEREIN.

• The number of people on the property may not exceed the number of guests in your reservation confirmation (regardless of whether they are staying the night or just visiting). Additional guest fees starting at $65 per person per night will apply to unauthorized persons.

• Age Requirement: All guests must be 18 years or older to enter the property.

• Your sole right to access the property begins with the 3 PM check-in and ends at the 11 AM check-out unless other times are approved in writing in advance. Check-in is not allowed after 9 PM unless approved in advance. We will charge a fee of $65 for an unauthorized early arrival or late check-out.

•Deposit Policy: Room reservations require a 48% advance deposit, with the remaining balance payable 2 days prior to arrival. Please review the rate details, terms, and conditions. A $250 security deposit will be held on your credit card before arrival and released seven days after checkout if unused. Homestead Modern may use this deposit for damages or rule violations. Note that these fees are separate and may appear duplicated if booked just seven days before arrival.

•Cancellation Policy: Changes or cancellations must be made at least three days (72 hours) before arrival, excluding the day of arrival. Cancellations made three days prior are eligible for a full refund, minus the credit card processing fee, while those made within three days will be charged 100% of the accommodation fees.

• Dogs: Let us know if you plan to bring a dog, as there is a $100 fee per pet. We allow two dogs up to 40 lbs and can provide a dog bed. Dogs must be leashed outside and cannot be left unattended in the room. Dog owners agree to the following additional rules: use protective sheets to cover any place where your dog may lie (we are not equipped to shampoo furniture or rugs or dry clean bedding after your departure); dogs must be leashed at all times when outside (there are coyotes in the High Desert, which present danger to unleashed dogs) and owners must immediately pick up after their dogs and deposit waste in a plastic bag and place it in the garbage bin; dogs are not to be left unattended in the property at any time. In addition to our additional dog cleaning fee, we will deduct the costs of extra cleaning (including at least $50 for pet fur left on furniture due to lack of use of the provided protective sheets) or repairs necessitated by the presence of your dog.

• Recreational vehicles, motorcycles, camping, or other overnight accommodations outside the property are prohibited. Violations of this policy will result in termination of the reservation with no refund.

• We do not guarantee the speed or availability of internet service. Internet service is provided by a wireless provider and may be subject to more fluctuations and outages than you may be used to. We do not provide refunds or discounts due to internet problems related to the provider or weather. No illegal or abusive use of Internet access is allowed.

• Cell service may not be available at the property due to the rural nature and geography of the area.

• The High Desert occasionally has power outages due to its rural nature. We are not responsible for any outages of Southern California Edison or any inconvenience such outage may cause. We will notify you of any planned outages and, if requested, will attempt to accommodate you elsewhere if a planned outage lasts more than 4 hours. But we do not provide refunds or discounts for unplanned power outages.

• No photoshoots are allowed on the property without prior written approval and the payment of additional fees. Unauthorized use of the rental property’s name, address, or images, including its interior, exterior, and private property surroundings, for any commercial use, including but not limited to selling, advertising, TV, film production, electronic, or other media, is not permitted. We will seek to have any use removed.

• Special events such as weddings and parties are not permitted without written approval and the payment of additional fees.

• Guests who utilize the hot tub and pool do so at their own risk, and we are not liable for any personal injury or other damages associated with such use. Guests may not use glass or pottery glassware, plates, etc., in or anywhere near any such water amenity. If any glass or potteryware is broken in or near a water amenity, you will be charged the total amount to drain and refill the amenity and for any lost revenue during such service.

No lifeguard is on duty; the primary guest on the reservation is responsible for the safe operation of the pool and the safety of any persons using the pool; by utilizing any pool or spa, all guests acknowledge and accept the risk of injury resulting from use of the pool, malfunction of pool equipment, tripping or falling around the pool/spa and any other injuries that may occur and waive all claims against the homeowner or its representatives including Homestead Modern LLC.

• Guests shall allow the property owner or any designated workers access to the property for landscaping and routine maintenance, cleaning, repairs and building inspections, and pool and hot tub repairs and service.

• If the property is unavailable for any reason beyond the owner's control, we may cancel your reservation, refunding only the actual fees and/or deposits you have paid.

• Smoking is prohibited inside the property or within 15 feet of any exterior door. Please dispose of your extinguished cigarette waste in a plastic bag and the outdoor garbage can. Do not leave cigarette waste on the grounds. If these rules are violated, we will charge a minimum of $250.

• The propane firepit and barbecues may not be used to burn wood or any other materials (it is illegal pursuant to a county ordinance and may damage the fixture). If combustible materials are burned in them, we will charge a minimum $500 cleaning fee.

• By making your reservation, you confirm that you will comply with (and your stay is allowed by) any applicable health or safety orders from the State of California.

• Firearms are not allowed on the property.

• Local ordinances prohibit any loud, excessive, or intrusive noise that disturbs the peace or causes discomfort or annoyance to any reasonable person at any time and strict quiet hours between 8 PM and 8 AM. You must adhere to these rules.

• Please pay attention to all relevant short-term rental ordinances and other regulations (such as the noise ordinance above) in accordance with county or town guidelines. If you violate any ordinance and, as a result, the property is fined, you will be responsible for payment of the fine plus a $500 administrative fee. :

Would stay again

We loved the retro/mid century decor around the place. Nature around it was incredible. We got to see jackrabbits a lot, chipmunks, and birds of all sorts around the property. The spaciousness of the apartment was a delight. The bed was really comfortable. The couch and chair in the living room were very comfortable as well. We didn’t get told the oven was broken. Thankfully we didn’t end up buying anything to heat up in the oven but we had seriously considered to bring a pizza from Trader Joe’s on our way there. Also the air conditioners is best not to mess with the settings, as they have to be coordinated otherwise it will stop working. We had our bedroom air conditioner stop at 4:30 am due to that quirky set up.

Amazing interiors, amenities, and support. Great bed and kitchen.. Jacuzzi pool was epic for stargazing! Fire pits were so cozy. Little walk up to the hill for sunset! Pool was a bit of a trek and the keypads didn’t work, but they sent someone over within minutes to help.

I love returning to the Bungalows when I visit Joshua Tree. The property is amazing.

Code was available in time to check in. Warm pool was not heated and jets were not working. I'm sure this is a temporary issue.

Lovely stay for a night while traveling solo. The proximity to other cabins, which would have been a negative if traveling with my partner, gave me the perfect degree of comfort I was seeking. I would choose this option again when on my own.

Beautifully designed mid century bungalow in a prime location between Joshua Tree and Palm Springs made for a great quic

I booked the Mountain View bungalow and the sights were beyond what I was expecting! Fully equipped kitchen allowed me to prepare light meals, coffee, and sip my own wine as if I were at home. Huge patio gave me lots of optional seats and views, and the grounds were well maintained with lots of places to explore. I brought my dog along and the accommodations from providing a dog bed, waste bags, and a little toy shaped like the iconic yucca trees was a very sweet detail. N/A

Peaceful desert getaway near Joshua Tree National Park

Very cute mid-mod property that looks just like the photos. Very clean and well-maintained. We appreciated the amenities and stocked kitchen since it is located a little outside of town, which is why we chose it. We wanted to be away from the lights to take in the night sky and the desert scenery. It isn't far enough out of town to get a true dark sky effect, but we could still see many stars and hints of the Milky Way from the firepit area. We appreciated being adjacent to the retreat center, as it is a very peaceful property with a labyrinth, and it's a short walk to their pool. Everything was wonderful!

Relaxing retreat.

The location of this property is both accessible and remote. Once you are in the bungalows you feel like you are in your own private desert escape. We loved the amenities provided in the suite, the bed was comfy, and the decor was simple and timeless. We also loved adventuring around the property and finding hidden gems. Our only complaint was that the water pressure in the shower was quite low but given the remote location, this is not surprising.

An attractive place to stay near Joshua Tree.

Attractive modern design circa 1960, tasteful and fairly spacious. Bungalow buildings are located on a large, rather dilapidated historic retreat property. Quiet place. Comfortable beds; kitchenette. Check in is electronic. I had some trouble with setting the (very quiet) heating/cooling unit but the lady from the remote reception was able to set it for me remotely.

Peaceful desert getaway with modern and artisanal amenities.

Wonderful amenities in the bungalow. Very relaxing, minimal design, and extremely comfortable bed/bedding. Quiet and peaceful surroundings. Kitchen was well-equipped and I enjoyed cooking and eating my meals there. Hiking with my dog on the trails just outside of the bungalow was a beautiful way to start the morning. I appreciated the thoughtful details that seemed to go into making this place feel like a retreat. I especially loved that there was no TV but lots of books, games, and a great bluetooth speaker.

A perfect place to stay to quietly enjoy the desert views.

The interior design was aesthetically pleasing. It was very quiet, and the views were amazing. You can easily take a walk through the Joshua Trees as well as through the grounds. The kitchen was equipped with everything you would need to cook. Although there was no staff on site, we were given a lot of information to ensure we understood everything about the stay and how to enjoy it. The air conditioning wasn’t as strong, it didn’t go up to the desired temperature so it got a bit cold. It would’ve been nice to have a humidifier as the air conditioning made it quite dry. The shower was also a bit weak and the water stayed lukewarm even when turned to hot.

We would highly recommend the Bungalows to anyone visiting the amazing Joshua Tree National Park.

Stunning views onto the desert. Nicely renovated and well-designed mid-century bungalow with plenty of outdoor space, surrounded by excellent planting. A fascinating location, next to the architecturally interesting Joshua Tree Retreat Centre (it was nice to have access to their pools and to see the outdoor art collection). Excellent locally roasted coffee in the welcome pack and a well-equipped kitchen, making self-catering a pleasure. We were slightly surprised to faintly hear traffic noise from the nearby main road - not what you expect on the edge of a desert. There was also some ambiguity over which parts of the site we were free to explore and which parts of the Retreat were off-limits.

Owesome view and modern design with a beautiful patio. The kitchen is also very good. We ate all meals in the room and used the kitchen a lot. It has all appliances and tools you need. It would be better if the shower has a slide door. It is a little cold while taking a shower since there isn't really a door. The shower place is only covered half way so water doesn't come out.

Super clean, updated mid-century 1BR w/excellent views & great kitchen. Hosts always available.

Easy entrance with keylock passcode, exceptionally clean and updated furniture. Fully stocked kitchen with some extra stuff if you wanted to purchase. Great view from our unit. Hosts very prompt in replying to emailed questions. Sheets were a little "short" - water in shower a bit light on the stream - no TV, but really, we LOVED not having one as it would have been turned on and it was soooo much better not having the option

Beautiful property and the bungalow was nice. However, there was a problem with the water during our stay. They had to shut off the water and when it came back on, the pressure was low and we were forced to take cold showers.

As previously communicated to all our guests during your stay, the water shut-off was necessitated by circumstances beyond our control. The Retreat Center, our host site, had to temporarily suspend water service due to an unforeseen leak on the premises. Following restoration of the water supply, there is a period during which the water must run to reestablish pressure and allow for reheating to ensure warmth. We would have appreciated an opportunity to address these concerns had you reached out to us, and we would have been pleased to provide this clarification. We hope this does not deter you from choosing to stay with us again and reconsider allowing us another chance to provide a 5-star experience. The ideal desert retreat.

This property was the perfect place. The bungalow was gorgeous, and so intentionally and thoughtfully decorated. The pool and hot tub were AMAZING. Located close enough to Joshua Tree for easy access to hike, it far enough away to avoid the traffic. Nothing, everything was fantastic.

Beautiful pet friendly property

Great location. In between Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley. The property is situated inside the Joshua Tree Retreat Center. Beautiful property, lots of space and areas for solitude. The bungalow we stayed in looked quite new with newer looking furniture and kitchen wares. The front porch or yard also had a large space with lounge chairs, and a corner for having coffee or reading a book. The view near our bungalow is beautiful. I loved the Chalice Well, although I only found it on our last day. I wish we also got to use the fire pit. The fire pit’s location imbued relaxation and peace. I got to see bunnies, multiple variety of birds and even a chipmunk! Most of all, I love that the property was pet friendly so we were able to bring along our doggie. We probably went during their low season and it was also midweek. Everything was closed except for the office. The cafe, retreat centers, meditation halls were all closed. It got dark too fast after 5 pm and we missed the entrance. There was a lighted post and it looked like a small entrance booth once you’re close to it but a lighted sign of the property’s name by the road would have been helpful. It was a 45 mph road but most of the cars were driving 55mph or more so once you missed the exit you have to go around. A doggie bowl and some plastic poop carriers would also be a great addition for pet friendly bungalows.

However, if the main sign to the property was not lit during your arrival, we apologize for the inconvenience caused. Please note that we are always available to assist guests who are having trouble navigating the grounds. If you are planning a visit from January to May, it is considered high season, while October through December is Mid-season, and June through July is a Slow season for hotels in the desert. We always recommend the Retreat Center amenities to our guests, but please be aware that these amenities need to be booked and confirmed through the Retreat Center. The Cafe hours do vary and are open typically from 9 am - 4 pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays. For guests traveling with pups, we do provide doggie poop bags and a bed. It was a small heaven next to Joshua Tree. It felt like spending the night in one of those architectural marvels you find in the Case Study House magazines of the 50’s. I didn't even know there was breakfast! If id known that it would be even harder not to book another day. It was so quiet and peaceful I didn't want to get up was i dreading coming back to the city. Definitely recommend this mmm The onlyt thing I'd liked to have had better was the water pressure in the shower. Everything else was great. Wish I was there tight now.

Had a lovely stay here! Beautiful furniture, bedding, and decor! Bergamot soap and parachute bedding was a nice touch. Host was very helpful and provided detailed info. Best Airbnb I've ever experienced! Location, facility, but disappointed with the pictures and other views. In the picture, it was a vast desert outside, but the accommodation I was assigned to was not guaranteed privacy because I could see another house right in front of me, and I chose it because of the view, which was the biggest regret. If I had informed you of this in advance before making a reservation, I would have thought about it at least once.

We did not expect our last minute booking in Joshua Tree to be so spectacular. I had no idea what to expect, but the Bungalows are on a gorgeous campus flanked by the titular trees themselves. The place is a whole ~vibe~ that looks just like the pictures, and more. What you may not initially appreciate is that many of the buildings on the grounds are by Frank Lloyd Wright and his son, and the campus has a long and mystic history! Anyways, the host had a super high tech (but SIMPLE) way to check in using a key lock, and was very responsive. We adored their decor and wanted to take home the chic linen bathrobes in the rooms. Their rep worked with us to place orders for new ones and to get them shipped to our home! They arrived a mere two days after we left! Adore the excellent customer service and wonderful stay.

We have stayed at other HSM properties in the past, this did not disappoint. Navigation took us to the right side of the property, we got lost in a maze of dirt roads, but with one quick call HSM GREAT customer service guided us back on track. Great that you can call anytime and get friendly service. The location was really unique and amazing. The room was clean and very well appointed. All soap and lotions, coffee, and treats were high end. We just love the mid century modern vibe. Check out the coffee table books to Learn about JT and the property, wonderful story of the area and Lloyd Wight.
We will most def stay here again and recommend to our friends and family.

Beautiful clean renovated space! A chance to stay at a legit Frank Lloyd Wright joint. The grill and propane fire pit is lovely and easy to operate. Pool and Hot tub were unoccupied most of the time. The grounds are absolutely lovely, could walk for miles off into the desert. Homestead Modern knows what's up! Thank you so much for a great stay.

If you love design and nature then this is the perfect spot for you. They did a gorgeous job of renovating these rooms. The room itself is immaculate and has a highly curated selection of cool decor and kitchenware. The views from the rooms are absolutely gorgeous and definitely a highlight. The location is also really spectacular as these remodeled rooms sit right in the middle of The Joshua Retreat Center. The Center itself, that was designed by Lloyd Wright, could use a little bit of TLC, but that just added to the charm of the whole experience. Overall, a fantastic stay!

A very clean, modern, and easy place to stay when headed into Joshua tree. The shared pool was clean and nice on a hot day. The appliances were easy to use and had everything you needed for a cooked meal. Beautiful sunsets and views. Would stay again!
