Description Description
Summary Summary
A-Z West House is the former home of internationally acclaimed artist Andrea Zittel, situated on a sprawling 80-acre compound (A-Z West) filled with site-specific artworks and direct access to Joshua Tree National Park. A-Z West is an evolving testing ground for living—a place in which spaces, objects, and acts of living all intertwine into a single ongoing investigation into what it means to exist and participate in our culture today.

Recently Featured in Travel & Leisure Magazine, April 2023

Since the early 1990s, Andrea Zittel has used the arena of day-to-day life to create sculptures and living situations that challenge typical notions of “how to live.” Within her house, Andrea used herself as a self-proclaimed human guinea pig in countless artworks that tested the boundaries of living. The outcomes of these experiments can be found in the house’s various spaces, objects and systems, all of which have been prototyped and reworked countless times before being collectively preserved as a complete artwork. Nearly every inch of the house has been customized or touched by Zittel with purpose and consideration. At the end of 2021, Andrea moved off A-Z West and her house is now available for private stays through Homestead Modern.

--HOME DETAILS--

While at A-Z West House visitors will live in and with Andrea’s art as she originally intended and be immersed in the ethos and environment of A-Z West. Staff is often available to guide visitors through the site, sharing their extensive knowledge of Andrea’s artworks, as well as their deep understanding of our high desert region. Visitors will experience the Mojave Desert holistically, providing greater insight and fostering meaningful connections with this amazing place.

-OUTDOOR SPACE-
The three distinct outdoor areas are intentionally integrated into the natural desert landscape.

The front patio features sunken-style benches that look out onto Joshua Tree. These conversation pits are perfect for small gatherings or simply enjoying the sunset, positioned just right, facing west.

The enclosed yard on the east side of the house is outfitted with lounge furniture, a small soaking tub (turned off in winter months, Nov-April), outdoor bed and shower.

The third patio, between the house and the boulders, offers a propane fire pit, and seating under the shade of a palo verde tree, and stairs leading up the hill onto the trails behind Andrea’s house. The house is surrounded by native plants, inviting a range of daily wildlife visitors.

-BEDS & BATHS-
The main bedroom and bathroom floors are cohesively tiled with rectilinear forms echoed on the walls and other artworks in the house. These forms integrate the different spaces as well as contextualize the shapes of other furniture such as the paneled bed platform and custom light fixtures. This bedroom includes a queen bed, mini-split for AC/Heat and ample built-in closet space. The bathroom includes lime-based plaster walls, custom vanity, and shower with access to the enclosed backyard where the outdoor shower is.

The second bedroom and bath can easily serve as a live-work space with shared access to a large office. This bedroom, which was Andrea’s son’s room, contains a full-size bed, small custom-built desk and wardrobe. The office, which looks out onto the boulder-filled backyard, contains a desk space spanning the length of the room and the bath contains a large soaking tub. **The second bedroom is the only room without AC and therefore can be quite warm during the summer.

Premium parachute linens and Onsen towels are stocked throughout, and Public Goods body products are provided in each bathroom.

-KITCHEN & DINING-
The kitchen, with A-Z West’s emblematic tiles covering the floor and back wall, is equipped with basic appliances for day-to-day cooking and dining seating for four next to a second wood burning stove. In line with Andrea’s practice of using A-Z Containers for all eating and drinking functions, the kitchen includes a variety of these ceramic bowls created by hand in our studio. From the kitchen and dining area, one may view and access the open, boulder strewn backyard, with steps leading right onto a trail.

Noteworthy Items:
• Outdoor dining table beneath mature Palo Verde, set for four
• Baking sheets, pots, pans and tinfoil
• Blender, toaster & dishwasher
• Cooking oil, salt & pepper and a few spices as well
• Tea, locally roasted coffee, and sugar in the raw. This home includes a tea kettle and French press.

-LIVING-
The living room houses Linear Sequence, an artwork custom built for the space. This singular piece of furniture serves several different purposes from lounging with a book to conversing with another over tea. Each surface of the work reflects a different use and gently guides you from one use to another. The living room also houses a majority of Andrea’s personal book collection, records, record player, and other artworks such as Vertical Accumulators. Vertical Accumulators, which take the form of hand-molded bronze hooks, are used throughout the house but in this room serve a particular function of holding years’ worth of dried tea bags. These remnants of individual cups of tea, echo a time when Andrea experimented with living independently of conventional time, tracking her time idiosyncratically by marking moments of consumption like bags of tea and cans of beer. The living room also includes a wood burning stove and access to the enclosed backyard.

-ESSENTIALS-
---Parking is available for three vehicles and two additional day guests are allowed until 10pm.

---There is a small washer & dryer available, though you must ask us for access in advance

---A-Z West House is equipped with high speed WiFi and is heated and cooled by two mini-splits, which keep the cabin comfortable throughout the year. The house also contains an evaporative cooler and two wood-burning stoves, heating and air conditioning.

-ACTIVITIES & ATTRACTIONS-
Visitors come to the High Desert for its unique landscape, culture, and recreational opportunities, as well as for the weather - hot and dry summers and mild winters at our high altitude. Joshua Tree and the communities surrounding the Joshua Tree National Park include Flamingo Heights, Pioneertown, Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley, and Landers. You’ll be close everything at Andrea Zittel's Joshua Tree Home. Some of our favorite options are…

–Joshua Tree National Park: 800,000 acres of mystical beauty - Joshua Tree National Park is one of the world’s most incredible natural desert treasures. Sweeping, grand in scale and populated by granite monoliths and voluptuous rock and boulder formations. This quiet land, conducive to meditation and roaming, was carved by extremes in climate - wind, rain and an ever-present, relentless sun. Diverse forms of plant life are found everywhere, but none as unique or prevalent as the park’s namesake: the Joshua tree, standing majestically across the vast topography.

–Pioneertown: Step back in time to thus rustic Old West-style village. Wander through the historic buildings, visit unique shops, catch a live music performance at Pappy & Harriets, and experience the Wild West charm.

–The Integratron: New age-y healing destination with a sound bath, originally designed by ufologist George Van Tassel with the goal of reversing the aging process.

Access Access
You will have the entire house and property to yourself, though because this home sits within A-Z West there will often be staff or artists passing by on the road or working in the structures or tortoise sanctuary next door to the home. You are welcome to wander and visit any art installations outside and hike into the park from the backyard, but please do not bother anyone inside a home or structure, except for the office/studio. There is not always staff on site to assist, but if they are in the studio they would love to assist you with an orientation of A-Z West.

Only registered guests are allowed, unless specifically agreed upon during the booking process. Any unannounced guests will be asked to leave and the reservation may be cancelled at will.

Also note, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO USE OF OFF HIGHWAY VEHICLES (OHV) IN THIS AREA.
Neighborhood Neighborhood
This Joshua Tree area is renowned for its forever vistas of the Mojave Desert and its proximity to the national park. The quiet neighborhood offers a tranquil vibe and big, open skies, so you’ll feel like you’re miles away from it all, but plenty of restaurants and things to do just a mile away in Joshua Tree Village. This particular house is adjacent to the national park and you are able to walk right into it from the back yard.

When you’re ready to hike, bike, or climb, Joshua Tree National Park’s Main entrance is just a 5-minute drive away.
Transit Transit
This is a remote location down dirt roads, so please take it slow. While a car is required to get around, a four wheel drive car is not, but note that roads will often have ruts, particularly after a rain.

This house is a gem! Oozing with charisma, art, and eccentricity it is the perfect spellbinding getaway to be inspired to create, relax, and enjoy. One of the best airbnbs I've ever stayed at, if it's available book it.

The most wonderful experience in the middle of the desert. Andre Zittel’s home is inspiring; beautiful , practical and unique. We felt at home straight away. The stars are unbelievable from the back yard! The location is great, just enough out of town for true peace but close enough for convenience. Homestead Modern were responsive and helpful. Check in was smooth, everything was spotless and clean, we loved it. Thank you.

As an artist and big fan of Andrea Zittel's work, it was amazing to have the opportunity to stay at her former house. It was clean and comfortable, and so cool to experience a work of art. We love the desert and find the landscape inspiring. I am already trying to figure out when I can return again and would definitely book the same place.

Absolutely the best property & location I have ever stayed at! As an artist, I learned about Andrea Zittel’s practice & work over 20 years ago & have been dreaming of visiting A-Z West since. Stunning surroundings, couldn’t ask for a more design forward home with the most unique details that reinforce the conceptual ideas in her work. The high desert is a very extreme environment so may not be for everyone-we are already planning a return visit, loved it!

This home is absolutely incredible. We had an amazing stay here. The house is welcoming and scenic. So many great touches; the furniture, the book collection, the perfect sized kitchen, comfortable beds, a full size soaking tub, and a spectacular view out each window in the house. Highly recommend!

We stayed during a very hot 100+ degrees July weekend. As soon as we stepped through the doors I was wowed by the interior beauty of the space with its incredible library of books and plants. We stayed inside during the day (nicely air conditioned) and ventured out in the a.m. and evenings. The grounds outside are inspiring . We spent evenings eating off the lovely outdoor wood table. We loved the handmade furniture, ceramic bowls and woven blankets. We came during a time when it was very secluded so nothing but us and nature. The location is very close to neighboring restaurants, the Saturday farmer’s market, etc. I highly recommend this place. I wish I could have stayed longer!

We loved our stay very much. It was perfect and very peaceful and we used pretty much all of the house. The only downside was the amount of ants. We made sure to clean very thoroughly after each time we cooked or ate but they still find their way to the kitchen from a crack in the tile. The swamp cooler didn’t seem to have much of an effect, and we also wished the pool was a bit bigger so we could all cool off, but we were aware of its size when booking the house. Otherwise, we loved the house and the area. Would definitely come again!!
- Review Date: 6/30/2024
We sincerely apologize for the issues you encountered during your stay. We want to let you know that we have addressed these concerns. The ant problem has been resolved by sealing the crack in the tile and implementing additional pest control measures. Furthermore, we have serviced the swamp cooler to ensure it is functioning effectively. We appreciate your feedback regarding the pool and understand your wish for it to be larger. While we cannot change the size, we hope the other improvements will enhance your future stays with us.

Great place to stay. Location is right up against a beautiful rocky hill. Quiet and peaceful. You can hike up into the park. Interior design is fun. Its showing some wear, but everything worked and was comfortable, especially the bed in the main bedroom. It was 100+ degrees F when there, but the mini-splits and swamp cooler kept the house cool. Hope to return again someday!

It felt like entering a monastery while being part of a magnificent artwork during a few hot days in June. We are incredibly grateful for all the literature, catalogs, and project descriptions available in the house. The instructional booklet with descriptions of the area and its background was also delightful. Adding to our wonderful experience was our visit to the HDTS studio and the various project sites.

This is the only place I want to stay in Joshua Tree from now on! It's so close to everything and yet feels so remote. The home is incredibly thoughtfully designed and a welcome reprieve from the cookie cutter aesthetic most AirBnb's have nowadays. Do not hesitate to book this one of a kind property. The charm of the interior of the house is matched by the gorgeous outdoor living space. Andrea's home made this my best visit to Joshua Tree to date. I wish all Airbnb's were at this level!

What a place to unplug, unwind and recharge. We lucked out getting this home when it was available last minute and what an experience for our family. The essence of the place as a place to reset and get back in touch with life and the things you love are apparent. We spent the bulk of our time at the fire pit sitting and taking in the views. There are multiple areas outside to sit and chill. You feel far away yet are close to amenities. Joshua tree entrance is right there and we spent time at night watching the starts from the park. We will be back.

Inside and outside, this is an incredibly beautiful space - we were staying in a piece of art. It was lovely to be close to amenities and in a quiet spot. The house is close to the park and town and we were able to get everything we needed within a short drive. The private outdoor spaces were also relaxing and wonderful to spend time in. The hosts have thought of everything - there are books, board games, puzzles and music. It was a memorable stay in a unique setting.

One of our favorite AirBnB spaces we’ve ever experienced. The design, tile floors, minimal vibe, all the tiny details, and of course stunning landscape and beautiful rock formations out back. We were in awe. Wish we had more than 2 days, but we’ll surely be back! Thanks so much for having us. ??

Our stay at AZ west was simply inspiring. Every aspect of the home and property has been carefully considered to maximize your connection with nature , provide solace , and give opportunities to commune. We used every amenity the home had to offer from the outdoor fire pit to playing scrabble in front of a wood burning fire listening to a well crated selection of music on the record player. The landscape outside left us breathless and we were not shy to explore every chance we got. Everyone at HDTS was kind, helpful, easy to communicate with and so generous with their time to give us added contextual history of the home, surrounding landscape and community.

If you are visiting Joshua Tree, you MUST stay here. This is a once in a lifetime experience! The house was immaculate and the design throughout was amazing, as you would expect in the house of world-renowned artist Andrea Zittel. The grounds are gorgeous and there are multiple places to relax and enjoy the other worldly environment. It is convenient to Joshua Tree (the town and the park), Twentynine Palms, Yucca Valley, and Pioneertown. There is public art all around, both on the property and nearby. If you want a relaxing escape in the desert in a place that will inspire you to think about the world around you and your place in it, a place to recharge and recalibrate, then this is that place. Book this property if you can…

This is the stay that is better than going to the national park. The dog bed, lint roller and bags for my dog, Sade were so considerate and welcoming! The house was beautiful and of course meticulously thought out and it was amazing to visit the artworks on the compound as well as hike around. The studio staff were also super friendly. I thoroughly enjoyed the library and just using this space and time for a creative reset. It has everything you need.

We loved our stay at A-Z West. After two years of living in a rural town in Northern CA (much smaller than Joshua Tree), my husband and I recently relocated to LA for my work. Staying on the property reminded us of our last home. It was very peaceful! We also loved visiting the three tortoises. As an art historian, I was also excited to stay in Zittel's house. We're planning to return for the holidays this year.

We had a wonderful time at A-Z house! I was very excited about experiencing the artwork from Andrea Zittel and have been following her for years. The compound is really beautiful with the outdoor bed and cactus gardens. We even saw the turtle sanctuary and baby turtle! Andrea's work is so inspiring and I'm excited to apply her ideas into my own work in compact living spaces. I alos highly recommend taking a tour of the workshop. Hannah was very informative and gave a comprehensive tour of the grounds.

an incredibly special place to relax / hideaway / do nothing with stunning surroundings. learned about and loved andrea’s work in college which made the interiors/design/furniture and objects even that much more meaningful. my boyfriend and i planned the trip here for the week specifically as a “work away from la” break - the house is perfectly appointed for this, and in general. homestead helped quickly with sending over a hotspot when the wifi was down the first two days due to previous week’s storm. it was 100 degrees all week so the swamp cooler + AC did struggle a bit…perhaps the heat of late august is not the ideal time to come here for everyone. the outdoor tub is funky and fun, the indoor tub is deep and nice, the natural light throughout is spectacular, the views of the mountains strategically captured through doors and windows. it feels like a really good fever dream. would love to come back here for a totally different and equally enthralling experience in the winter.

Stayed a couple days with my 7yr old and husband to get a quick change of scenery (WFH mama). The home, the property, the literature, the pure intention of this space... is incredible, and impossible not to be inspired by. Everything you need is here, whether it be silence, good conversation, perspective, or just a bit of sand in your shoes...it's all within reach. The onsight caretaker, who we were grateful to meet, is as sweet as they come, and was kind enough to show us the rescue tortoises as well as the work studio onsite. I cannot say enough about what a pleasure it was to spend time here, and am grateful it has been made accessible to us. My son's favorite part was discovering the artwork scattered around the property, and pondering what they might mean to the lizards and the jackrabbits. Thank you again.

Seriously, this is the best Airbnb that my family and I have ever stayed at. We loved the intentional design, the beautiful kitchen, and stunning front and back yards. The space is a work of art and it is obvious the love and joy that it took to create. My kids loved exploring the property especially the rock formation outside the backyard. We all can not wait to return! Perfect location just a short drive from downtown JT. I could not recommend staying here high enough. My only concern is that as word spreads it will always be booked - it is that good!

Our stay at the A-Z house was SPECTACULAR. Before arriving, the host got in touch with me to give step by step instructions on how to access the property. Once we arrived, there was a booklet of information on both the property and the area that was so helpful. I reserved this weekend getaway for my husband’s birthday who is very into relational aesthetics and art in general. We had such a great time exploring the property and seeing all of Andrea Zittel’s work. Inside the airbnb, everything is curated to perfection. It was such a beautiful space to spend time in and relax. Thank you thank you thank you!

As a longtime admirer of Andrea Zittel's work, it was a dream come true to have the opportunity to live, however briefly, in her home and have the time to reflect on the details-- how colors continually changed with the daylight, for example-- and to experience her way of seeing and adapting her environment for efficiency while elevating it aesthetically. Everything was perfect, balanced, serving a purpose. Can't wait to come back and experience other seasons.

Excellent stay at the A-Z West property. The property and grounds were beautiful and we didn't end up leaving for over 3 days, even though we originally intended to go into the park and check out the surrounding areas, because the stay was so peaceful. We brought our own food to hold us over for a few days and prepared all our meals in the house. There were a few insects in the home to account for (it is the desert after all), especially when we checked in, but we cleared most of them out and once we moved the past that, the rest of the stay was excellent. Would stay here again in a heartbeat. Homestead Modern was a great host and responsive to all our communication and requests.

It was one of the best places I have stayed when away from home. The place is surely inspirational and owner's creative spirit was everywhere to be seen and felt. Wish we could stay longer than 4 nights. We all enjoyed our time away from the daily grinds and in the middle of nowhere (well.. almost). Got to gaze at the night sky, spotted wild life (rattle snakes, turtles), hikes, without having to leave the hill. We immensely enjoyed. Outdoor bed was really nice.. I slept on all night outdoors. Hosts provided a hammock upon special request, and that made it worth gazing at the stars. We visited the cactus garden-start gazing and hiked 49 palm oasis hike which was fabulous. More hammocks on the property will be really nice...as only one of us could use it. There were couple accidental damages to the artful dishes and hosts were really nice in handling that. Would be looking forward to visiting again to find this place even more fabulous (may be a pool).

Amazing place! Highly highly recommend, we stay at a lot of airbnbs but this one was certainly special. It's about a 5 minute drive to the park entrance, 15 to groceries. Have to drive up a dirt road to the property with some large dips near the highway so low clearance vehicles will scrape/hit. The place is incredibly private except for the studio ~200ft from the house. The studio has people working during the day, but we never saw anyone in our 4 day stay. From inside the house it always feels completely private, and during the evenings you feel as you have the whole area to yourself. We had some cell signal, and the wifi was decent at ~ 5mbps down and up, plenty for streaming. The house has a swamp cooler that isn't very useful since the ground water is so warm, but the two mini splits were able to keep the place very cool even in 100+ degree weather. Bed was also very comfy, one of the best sleeps we've had in a while! The house itself is gorgeous with great styling and incredibly cosy feeling. I would buy this home in a heartbeat, it feels inviting and warm. The outside patio is also great, and make sure to use the outside shower! 10/10, would recommend.

I so much don’t want people to know about this place… but I guess I have to. You could consider it as a ‘regular’ AirBnB and it would already be amazing. But it’s way more. It’s being surrounded by art in the house of one leading contemporary artist, and by art projects all around the house within walking distance. If you want to party that’s not the right pick. If you want to read, work, think, watch the desert, lizards and bobcats in front of the window, and just unwind and mediate, there’s no better spot.

Our stay at AZ west was nothing short of spectacular. The landscaping, the architecture, the design--every inch of this compound is imbued with creative energy. Spending time there was rejuvenating, inspiring, and grounding. For anyone seeking to experience and absorb the gifts of this desert's spirit, THIS is the place to stay. The entire compound is a living extension of the land. It is an artist's imagination turned inside out and allowed to reinvent itself over time. We did not want to leave! Communication with the Homestead Modern was seamless and we had everything we needed. Groceries and restaurants were just minutes away, yet we felt totally removed from everything. Being at AZ west is like being in another dimension. We cannot wait to come back!!!
