—--

30 years on “The Monument House” is still equally jarring and relevant. It is nestled amid the giant boulders near the entrance of Joshua Tree National Park (known as Joshua Tree National Monument when the house was designed). The desert sun creates dramatic, choreographic shadow play with the right angles of the architecture and perforations. As a highly conceptual shelter, it is an extreme contextual marriage of location and organic postmodern architecture, an unprecedented alien style as distinctive as the landscape surrounding it.

"Everyone thinks of the desert as monochromatic. But when you look carefully, there are all these amazing colors: a vivid green lichen growing on a rock, a bright red flower, and the impossibly blue sky. This compound takes those colors and builds them at the scale of man, which is bigger than the flower, but a lot smaller than the rocks." - Architect, Josh Schweitzer

The cubic shape, with trapezoidal openings, mirrors the surrounding landscape, which is dominated by fragmented monzogranite boulders. Three vertical cubic pavilions, each boldly painted in deep desert colors and punctuated by random trapezoidal openings and windows huddle together in both animated and natural harmony with the exaggerated and surreal surrounding landscape. This house comes from, stands outside of, and comments on both the natural and the man made landscapes. The forms may seem primitive, but they are derived from Schweitzer's former employer, Frank Gehry.

The most recent custodian of the house was composer Harold Budd. The house was his muse for 20 years and the shelter under which he composed many musical pieces and poetry. “Although its aura is ethereal and unworldly, Budd's music is actually an exemplary form of humanly useful music.” An apt description of his work and one that beautifully encapsulates this historic house as well.

LIVING SPACE
Open living area, focused on verticality in a landscape of horizontal expanse. There is comfortable couch seating and throw blankets alongside a propane fireplace, books, games and a bluetooth speaker. There is no TV at Monument House.

KITCHEN & DINING
The kitchen and dining area is surrounded by carefully placed window frames with a view of the mountains but in a cut-off angled manner, so that the desert is seen through hexilated snapshots.

-Propane fire-pit and loungers
-Native & ancient landscaping surrounding the home

ACTIVITIES/ATTRACTIONS
Visitors come to the High Desert for its unique landscape, culture, and recreational opportunities, as well as for the weather - hot and dry summers and mild winters at our high altitude. Joshua Tree and the communities surrounding the Joshua Tree National Park include Flamingo Heights, Pioneertown, Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley, and Landers. You’ll be close to all the action at Josh Schweitzer's Monument House. Some of our favorite options available to you:

–Joshua Tree National Park: 800,000 acres of mystical beauty - Joshua Tree National Park is one of the world’s most incredible natural desert treasures. Sweeping, grand in scale and populated by granite monoliths and voluptuous rock and boulder formations. This quiet land, conducive to meditation and roaming, was carved by extremes in climate - wind, rain and an ever-present, relentless sun. Diverse forms of plant life are found everywhere, but none as unique or prevalent as the park’s namesake: the Joshua tree, standing majestically across the vast topography.

–Pioneertown: Step back in time to thus rustic Old West-style village. Wander through the historic buildings, visit unique shops, catch a live music performance at Pappy & Harriets, and experience the Wild West charm.

• The Integratron: New age-y healing destination with a sound bath, originally designed by ufologist George Van Tassel with the goal of reversing the aging process.

This home is so special. We thoroughly enjoyed a peaceful and relaxing visit. The house amenities are above and beyond. We loved the portable speaker, fire place & fire pit, the most comfortable outdoor lounge chairs, and outdoor grill. The farmers market every Saturday is a must if you plan to cook. If not, the local grocery and health food stores are close and have plenty to offer. The proximity to Joshua Tree National Park is ideal. If you’re a shopper, the vintage shops in town are worth a visit, along with a couple local stores. We enjoyed sitting outside for sunsets and stargazing in the quiet surroundings of the desert. Thank you for a truly unique experience. Sincerely, Terrence & Wendy

We came for a long weekend with our pup to celebrate a birthday. Moment house is a gorgeous place, and the hosts added several very thoughtful touches. We used the crap out of the kitchen and grill and hot tub. this was a perfect trip for us. Thank you so much!

It’s a beautiful and unique space. The light and shade cycles of the desert are thoughtfully incorporated into the design of the place. A perfect oasis, well-positioned next to Joshua Tree National Park. The dirt road is a little rough but you get the hang of it.

One of our favorite places in the world, we've stayed here before and will again. The house is amazing and the location even better. Watching the stars from the hot tub was magnificent. The space is ideal for one or two people, probably not for a larger group. The hosts are terrific and provide the basics of what you will need for a great stay, there are plenty of shops nearby to get everything else.

Our stay at the Monument House for six nights was an absolute delight. The house has been beautifully integrated into the natural surroundings, featuring a stunning indoor and outdoor design. The outdoor space was immaculate and truly complemented the overall charm of the place. The location was also very convenient, being just a quick 10-minute drive to the Joshua Tree NP west entrance and a mere 15 minutes away from Yucca Valley, which was handy for grocery shopping and dining out. Our interaction with the host was excellent! Their thoughtfulness was apparent and greatly appreciated. The host have provided us with valuable recommendations on local food, drink, and activities, many of which we took up and were not disappointed. We are eagerly looking forward to our next stay at the Monument House and would highly recommend it to others.

A wonderful and relaxing stay in Joshua tree! We loved staying at this architectural marvel! The stargazing from the hot tub, cooking a meal on the grille, and ice cream by the fire pit are memories we will have for a lifetime. Highly recommend booking here. A few important points for future guests: -make sure and follow the written instructions from the host to arrive!! We only put in the latitude and longitude and we got in a tricky situation with our car. Highly recommend screenshooting and following their easy to follow instructions! Generally don’t book unless you have 4 wheel drive for the dirt roads! -bring house shoes or flip flops! The floor is a concrete with stone that can be tough on bare feet. -we had a bit of a cricket problem in the kitchen and bathroom but they were harmless, important to know for bug scared guests :)

Hi Macy! Thank you for choosing Monument House in Joshua Tree! We're thrilled that you had a wonderful and relaxing stay in this architectural marvel. We agree that stargazing from the hot tub, cooking on the grill, and enjoying ice cream by the fire pit are unforgettable experiences. We are sorry you had challenges, but we were happy to help out! We also have new slippers ordered, and apologize that we did not have them ready during your stay. We appreciate your recommendation and will use your feedback to improve future guests' experiences. If you have any further suggestions or need assistance, please reach out. We hope to welcome you back for another memorable stay!

We had a great stay at Homestead Modern, such an amazing house in a fantastic location! We didn't notice it until late in the day, but the bathroom door was broken, hopefully that's an easy fix. I messaged them about it the next morning and they responded quickly, so appreciated that! Would definitely recommend, especially to all the architecture fans!

Hands down my favorite AirBnb experience to date. Loved the thoughtful details, like a basket of blankets for the outdoors when it gets chilly, bluetooth speaker, and Parachute bathrobes. We dined al fresco by the fire pit every night, stargazed from the hot tub, and watched sunsets from the massive rocks in the front of the house. The bedroom is quite cozy in size, but overall this place is the perfect amount of space for two. Location felt very private, and is only a 3 minute drive to the Joshua Tree West Entrance. Note: would recommend driving an SUV if possible, as the dirt roads leading to the house can get quite bumpy. This is a really special place, and I'm already planning my next visit. <3

The house was so unique! Not large, but perfect for two! We loved the location, the hot tub, the outdoor space and fire pit. The living room was comfy and the kitchen was very well equipped. Small-ish bedroom, but gigantic bathroom. Great landscaping and outdoor lighting, and the EV charger was a wonderful surprise! Private, romantic and peaceful and we’d love to come back.

The Monument House was an exceptional experience. It was the two of us and our dog and from the moment we entered the house we felt at home. It was really well appointed. A dog bed, lint roller, sheet cover, and dog bags were available to us. The house itself feels like a museum piece. It’s strange to say this but we felt honored having the privilege to stay there. It’s functional yet quirky and amazing, much like most of Joshua Tree. The house, though you would think is very much form over function, had much of the function. Air conditioning and heat were great and we appreciated cooking in a well appointed kitchen. We used the secluded hot tub in the evenings and loved it. It’s tranquil. The place also has a reliable EV charger. Just bring your adapter. There are some desert reptiles, birds, and other animals so it was great for wildlife watching. Despite the urban design of the property you’re still in a secluded part of the desert and should expect encounters so leash up your pup.

Hello Chaise! We are so happy that you enjoyed the serenity and natural beauty of this unique area. With that quiet remoteness comes some unique terrain as well! While the property is still close to everything, especially the JT National Park, we must help guests get there - and glad that the directions helped. Turn left at the cactus!

What a respite from work! Monument House was everything we were looking for in Joshua Tree: close to the park for glorious and rigorous hikes, private and surprisingly spacious for two adults, and a fabulous hot tub in the boulders where we soaked and watched the moon rise, intermingled with the tub's steam, from behind the rock outcropping. One of our best experiences w Airbnb. We brought a toaster, as we realized there was none in the house, but we could have toasted with care using the oven. No microwave either. We plan to return this autumn!

The place was as pictured! The floors are really hard, I'd suggest bringing bedroom slippers to wear in the house. I wish there was a microwave. Also, the host sent you the door code for entry 3 hours in advance, despite sending the other check in instructions earlier. I was worried about not having cell phone signal since we were hiking in the park prior to check in- so asked to be sent the door code earlier, which the host did do. Everything was clean and well kept, hot tub was nice. The one living room chair was kind of wonky. The host did provide us with a bottle of wine, which was really nice to enjoy in the evenings.

The Monument House itself was amazing. Very unique, private, and super close to the west entrance of Joshua National Park. The inside looks exactly like what you see in the photos. Things that we were really impressed with: desert view, easy check-in, environment, location, hot tub, super dog friendly! The only thing that I would point out is that you’d have to reset the pilot of the indoor fireplace a few times during your stay. We do hope Homestead Modern would respond faster when we had questions about the unlit fireplace. Other than that everything was phenomenal. There were coyotes roaming around the house so be careful! Would recommend and stay again!

We had such an amazing time at the Monument house. The space is truly special and such a serene environment for a quiet staycation. The hosts were responsive, communicative and super pleasant to work with. It was so nice to use the hot tub here on a chilly night, surrounded by beautiful nature under the stars. The house is also right at the entrance into Joshua Trees, making it so easy to drive into the park. We drove in to catch sunset and it was perfect. Thank you Homestead Modern, for a gorgeous relaxing stay we will never forgot! What a dream!

Staying at Homestead Modern was a wonderful experience! The house itself was clean and had the necessities. The inside living area was spacious and comfortable and offered great views. The bedroom, though on the smaller side, worked and the bed was quite comfortable. There was a big bathroom that included an open air shower. We cooked multiple meals in the kitchen and found everything we needed (except a toaster, but we just used the stove). The boulders/rock formations give the property a good amount of privacy, including by the hot tub. The hot tub was a highlight, especially at night when the stars were out. It was clean, warm, and the perfect distance from the house. We also had our puppy dog with us; the property is dog friendly and our pup had a great time! Lastly, the host is very responsive and easy to contact. We would definitely stay again!

I can’t say enough good things about staying here. Every detail was thought out. The home was fully decked out, and really was an experience like no other. From the architecture, to the amenities, staying in Joshua tree couldn’t have been any better. The jacuzzi at night under the stars was sensational. We used the kitchen and outdoor BBQ pit every night, and the absolute only thing they didn’t have is a can opener, but really that was not a big deal as there’s a Walmart and other shops right down the road. The bedding and pillows were exceptional and the living room was perfect for relaxing after a long day. I was glad there was no television as it made the experience even better. During different times of day the windows would cast certain shadows in the home which made you feel like you were part of an art piece. They provided indoor slippers, too! I will definitely be back. Thanks again.

There are a lot of superlatives I can use to describe Monument House, but the one that comes most to the point is “Wow!” Admittedly there was initial apprehension on my part when my partner expressed interest in staying here — would renting a notable place be like living in a museum, institutional and full of restrictions? The answer is unequivocally no. Make no mistake, the space is marvelous; picture Dr. Seuss-meets-Flintstones. The space feels incredibly large (even though it really isn’t) because of all the windows and 6 (!) glass doors. Privacy isn’t an issue even with the glass as it’s reasonably far away from neighbors and is surrounded on a couple of sides by big boulders. Amenities were plentiful — though I’ll reiterate NO tv and microwave, neither of which was a negative to us. Wanna watch something? Go outside and look up or around at the variety of wildlife that wanders by. Need to heat something? Just use fire (grill/stove/oven). Boom. Done. The kitchen is fully stocked with whatever you may need — cook & bake ware, flatware, plates, bowls, spices, oil, blender — so cooking a meal is never a problem. Don’t want to cook? Check out the list of recommendations Homestead Modern provides. Went to most of them and none of them are misses. Moving outside, even more “Wow!” The fire pit is the best place to settle in for a sunrise (thanks for the blankets that makes it even cozier!) or a sunset with some wine and a charcuterie & cheese board. The table in the gazebo made for a great breakfast and lunch spot…and “remote work” space. And the jacuzzi. That. Jacuzzi. Space. Fire it up at night, turn off all the lights, and watch the magic unfold overhead. Want some quiet and solitude? Pick one of the dozens of large boulders surrounding the property, plop down, and live your best life. The question for us isn’t whether we’d come back — it’s a guarantee we will. Heaven forbid this property ever comes up for sale — we’d sell everything to buy it! It’s that good.

The Schweitzer House was amazing. It is unrivaled in terms of uniqueness and proximity to the park. We stargazed, we listened to Harold Budd, we stared at the walls, at the ceiling, at each other. It was lovely. Homestead Modern was gracious enough to leave us some wine, snacks and a handwritten note. We felt lucky to get to experience such a rare and special property.

For one or two people (maybe three) visiting Joshua Tree National Park, this is the ideal place to stay. Architecturally stunning, well managed, amazingly peaceful, and minutes from the Park. Stargazing from the hot tub was a revelation.

Words can't express what an exceptional stay I had at Monument House hosted by Homestead Modern. HM truly delivers a premier vacation experience with tailored concierge services typically only offered by luxury resorts. The concierge team reached out in advance to accommodate any special grocery items I would like to have pre-stocked upon arrival, in addition to providing a detailed guide regarding home amenities and nearby attractions. Staying at Monument House truly is an unrivaled experience, and HM has done an exceptional job of preserving the architectural significance of the property while delicately blending in natural design elements of the high-desert. The interior of the home features thoughtfully appointed furnishings to provide a comfortable, yet immersive experience. In the living area, the high ceilings and trapezoidal windows illuminate the room with eccentric shadows that accentuate the surrounding boulders and alien-like landscape. The bedroom provides undoubtably the most comfortable sleeping experience I've had at a vacation rental , which is attached to an on-suite bathroom in which the alluring architectural appeal carries through. The outdoor space truly optimizes the high-desert experience where the unique beauty of the home and high-desert blend together facilitating a hypnotic desert experience. A trip to Monument House truly wouldn't be complete without unwinding at night in the hot tub where the night sky is illuminated by the hazy glow of the Milky Way. If you're looking to connect with nature while immersing yourself in an architectural masterpiece, Monument House is for you!

What an incredible property! It’s a simply stunning/breathtaking property that’s even better in person than the beautiful photos. Gorgeous interior design/architecture that really is hard to fault. We enjoyed star gazing at night from the hot tub and early breakfasts in the outdoor dining room as the sun rose. The house was also spotlessly clean. This home is an absolute credit to the owner and also the fantastic hosting team and we felt lucky to have had the chance to stay there ??
