Rated one of Michelin Guide's Top Hotels worldwide for 2023

"The only way a hotel makes the cut is by having extraordinary style, service, and personality. It must be a jewel of its community, and it must never, ever be boring.” - Lucy Lieberman, International Director of MICHELIN Guide Hotels

"Since debuting in 2010, Homestead Modern has earned a reputation as the leader in offering the High Desert’s most chic remote accommodations ...Now the company is expanding to offer a hotel-style destination, firmly cementing its foothold in desert hospitality.” - C Magazine

On the edge of Joshua Tree National Park, where a forest of wild paloverde trees meets towering granite boulders, the Joshua Tree Retreat Center welcomes the first traditional premium hospitality offering in the area. The 14 suites, now known as The Bungalows, were designed and constructed in 1960 by the architect Harold Zook as accommodations for the site’s on-campus teachers. Located in the northwest corner of the center’s more than 130 acres of desert, The Bungalows still feature their original wood exteriors, while the interiors seem sun-bleached, with earthy jute and sea grass rugs, woven cane-backed chairs, and intricate millwork to evoke a bare-sand feel.

The spaces were redeveloped by the hospitality company Homestead Modern and restored in collaboration with the consulting designer Brad Dunning; as a nod to the work of the Swiss architect Albert Frey, the rooms are accented with yellow textiles the color of Encelia flowers, a hue popularized by Frey in his modernist structures in nearby Palm Springs.

Floor-to-ceiling glass panels and sleek concrete floors blend with expansive outdoor patios and the views beyond. During a stay, guests can cook in their kitchen, on the site’s communal grills or dine at the retreat center’s vegetarian cafe.

HOMESTEAD MODERN & SELF CHECK-IN:
Guests of The Bungalows enjoy the same level of hospitality as those of Homestead Modern’s properties in the High Desert. With simple design changes and integration of technology, we strive to reduce unnecessary contact with your environment, reduce congestion points, enhance cleaning protocols, and offer our guests a low-touch experience with high guest service. We utilize an intelligent lock for each Bungalow that creates a unique code for each guest, allowing a self check-in process.

There is no front desk, though our local support team is available from 9am-9 pm daily via phone, text, or email, and we also have managers on site from about 10 - 6pm daily, usually.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE:
Through our partnership with Public Goods, guests of The Bungalows will find a refrigerator and pantry stocked with healthy and sustainable snacks and drinks upon arrival. These items are available for purchase (added to your bill at check-out).

• Age Requirement: All guests must be 18 years or older to enter the property.

• Your sole right to access the property begins with the 3 PM check-in and ends at the 11 AM check-out unless other times are approved in writing in advance. Check-in is not allowed after 9 PM unless approved in advance. We will charge a fee of $65 for an unauthorized early arrival or late check-out.

•Deposit Policy: Room reservations are guaranteed with an advance deposit of 50% at the time of booking. Kindly review the rate details, terms, and conditions. The security deposit of $250 will be held on your credit card the day before arrival and, if not used, released seven days after check-out. The deposit may be used, at the discretion of Homestead Modern, to pay for any damages to the hotel or violation of the property rules. Please note these fees are charged separately and might appear as duplicates if you booked just seven days before your arrival date.

•Cancellation Policy: All changes or cancellations must be made three days (72 hours) before the arrival date to avoid a forfeit of the advanced deposit. This does not include the day of your arrival.

Dog owners agree to the following additional rules: use protective sheets to cover any place where your dog may lie (we are not equipped to shampoo furniture or rugs or dry clean bedding after your departure); dogs must be leashed at all times when outside (there are coyotes in the High Desert, which present danger to unleashed dogs) and owners must immediately pick up after their dogs and deposit waste in a plastic bag and place it in the garbage bin; dogs are not to be left unattended in the property at any time. In addition to our additional dog cleaning fee, we will deduct the costs of extra cleaning (including at least $50 for pet fur left on furniture due to lack of use of the provided protective sheets) or repairs necessitated by the presence of your dog.

• Recreational vehicles, motorcycles, camping, or other overnight accommodations outside the property are prohibited. Violations of this policy will result in termination of the reservation with no refund.

• We do not guarantee the speed or availability of internet service. Internet service is provided by a wireless provider and may be subject to more fluctuations and outages than you may be used to. We do not provide refunds or discounts due to internet problems related to the provider or weather. No illegal or abusive use of Internet access is allowed.

• Cell service may not be available at the property due to the rural nature and geography of the area.

• The High Desert occasionally has power outages due to its rural nature. We are not responsible for any outages of Southern California Edison or any inconvenience such outage may cause. We will notify you of any planned outages and, if requested, will attempt to accommodate you elsewhere if a planned outage lasts more than 4 hours. But we do not provide refunds or discounts for unplanned power outages.

• No photoshoots are allowed on the property without prior written approval and the payment of additional fees. Unauthorized use of the rental property’s name, address, or images, including its interior, exterior, and private property surroundings, for any commercial use, including but not limited to selling, advertising, TV, film production, electronic, or other media, is not permitted. We will seek to have any use removed.

• Guests who utilize the hot tub and pool do so at their own risk, and we are not liable for any personal injury or other damages associated with such use. Guests may not use glass or pottery glassware, plates, etc., in or anywhere near any such water amenity. If any glass or potteryware is broken in or near a water amenity, you will be charged the total amount to drain and refill the amenity and for any lost revenue during such service.

No lifeguard is on duty; the primary guest on the reservation is responsible for the safe operation of the pool and the safety of any persons using the pool; by utilizing any pool or spa, all guests acknowledge and accept the risk of injury resulting from use of the pool, malfunction of pool equipment, tripping or falling around the pool/spa and any other injuries that may occur and waive all claims against the homeowner or its representatives including Homestead Modern LLC.

• Guests shall allow the property owner or any designated workers access to the property for landscaping and routine maintenance, cleaning, repairs and building inspections, and pool and hot tub repairs and service.

• If the property is unavailable for any reason beyond the owner's control, we may cancel your reservation, refunding only the actual fees and/or deposits you have paid.

• By making your reservation, you confirm that you will comply with (and your stay is allowed by) any applicable health or safety orders from the State of California.

• Firearms are not allowed on the property.

• Local ordinances prohibit any loud, excessive, or intrusive noise that disturbs the peace or causes discomfort or annoyance to any reasonable person at any time and strict quiet hours between 8 PM and 8 AM. You must adhere to these rules.

• Please pay attention to all relevant short-term rental ordinances and other regulations (such as the noise ordinance above) in accordance with county or town guidelines. If you violate any ordinance and, as a result, the property is fined, you will be responsible for payment of the fine plus a $500 administrative fee.
